Parents and caregivers play a vital role in the well-being and success of child and youth witnesses. Their stress levels, attitudes, and comments can significantly influence how a young person experiences the court process.

This session is designed to equip parents and caregivers with the knowledge and tools to effectively support their young person through the justice system involvement.

Participants will be presented the Child and Youth Witness Court Preparation Program curriculum to better understand how children and youth are prepared to testify. Additional themes discussed in the session include:

  • Choosing the most appropriate support person for a young witness
  • Understanding possible court accommodations
  • How to help a young person prepare without affecting the integrity of their evidence
  • Exploring practical strategies for offering support before, during, and after court and other relevant topics pertaining to criminal court proceedings and young witnesses

While specifics of cases and the evidence are not discussed, participants are encouraged to ask general questions in a safe and confidential environment.
